Collecting a car abroad: how does it work in practice?

A car bought in Germany, left behind in Belgium or stranded in France. Collecting the vehicle seems simple, but the reality is in the details.

Driving or transporting

The first question is always whether the vehicle can and may be driven. A car with valid insurance and registration documents can usually be driven; a vehicle without valid documents or insurance, or not roadworthy, requires transport. That difference determines the cost, the timeline and which arrangements are needed in advance.

Paperwork and handover

Collection almost always means handover: keys, documents, sometimes a payment or a signature. That goes smoothly when it is clear in advance who hands over what on site and what needs checking. Photographs of the vehicle's condition on departure prevent discussion on arrival.

Time is the real factor

A trip to southern Germany and back is a day or more in practice, including travel to the collection point. Doing it yourself costs you that day. Outsourcing it means the car arrives and the day stays yours.

How we look at it

We assess every vehicle request individually: location, condition, documents, insurance and timeline. We look at what is possible per request and say so honestly when something is not responsible or not permitted.
